In this article, trained Hypnotherapist Roseanna Leaton discusses the virtues of hypnotism in dealing with the psychosomatic effects of Irritable Bowel Syndrome.
How to Make Your IBS Disappear.
Are you frustrated by the unpredictability of your IBS symptoms? It is just so frustrating to be restricted in what you do and where you go because of not knowing what your GI tract is going to do next. Do you stay home or do you try to go about your normal life and simply put up with it?
Most IBS sufferers have tried different diets and pills and potions, with varying degrees of success. Some people seem to find a diet that works for them and then stick to it religiously. This can work in the long terms for a few lucky people although for others the respite may be all too short lived. A similar variance in success is experienced by those who try other remedies. What everyone wants of course is a cure for IBS, something which works once and for all.
In actual fact there are many illnesses which respond in different ways for different people. But IBS is one of the most unpredictable of all. Nearly everyone ends up spending many months and years trying out different treatments. One of the most successful treatments which in research studies has been shown to be effective on an ongoing basis is hypnotherapy.
Perhaps this is because people respond in their own way to hypnotherapy. Hypnosis and suggestion are very adaptable and each individual will perceive the messages which they are being given in their own unique way. Even when you listen to a standard hypnosis IBS cure mp3 you will always adapt to it and respond to it in your own way; you will therefore respond in a manner which suits you.
In utilizing hypnosis to cure your IBS you will find that your imagination is involved. When asked to visualize your body functioning as it should do, you will imagine it in your own way. Even when you are given very specific and detailed guided imagery, you will still see it in your own way. This may in fact contribute towards hypnotherapy being such a powerful tool and so effective in curing IBS.
Add to that the fact that hypnosis is a state of relaxation and so both mind and muscles relax fully and you can further see how this naturally assists in curing your body of “stress”; I’m not referring to stress in the overused way that it is referred to in this day and age. Rather I’m referring to its actual meaning (although hypnosis is most often the perfect antidote to all types of stress).
The use of hypnosis helps you to take a step back, allowing you to take the pressure off, and to achieve a state of balance and harmony. Your mind and body always work together, and so hypnosis allows you to use your mind to lead your body into a state of relaxed harmony. As you visualize everything in your GI tract flowing smoothly you really can make your IBS disappear.

As somebody who has undergone hypnotic-treatment for alleviating IBS symptoms, I can personally vouch for its merits. In my own case, I was told to imagine that I was pouring iced water onto the heat generated by the pain. This process was then triggered by the single word “Calm”. I’m not sure how Ms. Leaton would undertake the therapy …why not take a look?
Here’s a diet-related IBS article by Neelima P, that advocates the inclusion of certain vegetables in order to stave off IBS symptoms:
Vegetables to Spice Up Your Diet For IBS
Irritable bowel syndrome, also known as IBS is common to most people. It can occur occasionally or in some advance stages, becomes a daily illness. There are several causes of IBS such as lack of exercise, poor eating habits and stress. If you are suffering from irritable bowel, it is important to plan a diet for IBS.
IBS can affect your daily routine and can give you other health issues in the long run. If you suspect having an IBS based on the symptoms you’re experiencing, seek your doctor’s help. You can prevent this health condition from worsening by asking your doctor to help formulate a diet for IBS which you can stick to.
The kind of food you eat everyday provides you the nutrients your body needs to stay alive and kicking. However, your diet may not include healthy stuffs alone since there are times you will be tempted to eat those which are not so healthy. However, if you suffer from IBS, you can still enjoy great food by adding delicious veggies in your diet for IBS. These vegetables should make it in your diet plan:
• Broccoli
Diet for IBS include greens such as broccoli. It is one of the various vegetables that can provide high fiber for proper colon movement and cleansing. It also helps maintain sugar level in the body as well as promoting regular bowel movement.
• Artichokes
If you’re a tea lover, this perennial thistle can be boiled to produce tea. Artichokes are known to have high fiber content and can be included in your diet for IBS. It is best taken on empty stomach or in the early morning.
• Cabbage
Cabbage consists of the same high fiber nutrients such as broccoli and other green leafy vegetables. They are best taken steamed or with less grease but can also be served as a side dish.
• Squash
Diet for IBS also includes squash which is commonly given to children due to its softness and delectable flavor. This delicious vegetable is not restricted to the young ones alone, you can also cook it with other meals or as a dessert.
• Potatoes
Potatoes have high fiber, but it is not recommended as a daily diet for IBS as it also contains carbohydrate and starch. Burning carbohydrate is important to prevent too much sugar in the body which also helps trigger constipation.
• Legumes
Peas and beans are ideal foods for people suffering from IBS. They are very rich in fiber and you can cook them in many ways. You can bake them or add as ingredients to your main course.
Aside from having these vegetables in your diet, it will also help to avoid those which can cause IBS. Your diet for IBS will only be effective if you remove these from your food list:
• Alcoholic drinks like beer, gin, and whiskey
• Caffeinated drinks
• Ice cream
• Sweets such as chocolates
• Milk products if you’re prone to lactose intolerance

Anyone who’s ever been to a doctor with a digestive problem, will know that the tag ‘IBS’ can sometimes be pinned on a patient, simply because the doctor either hasn’t got a clue about the cause, or the inclination to bother finding out.
What Is The Best Natural Treatment for Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis? by Karen Alison
Irritable Bowel Syndrome and the two inflammatory bowel diseases of Crohn’s and Colitis (IBD) share some of the same symptoms: pain, cramping, bloating, urgency, gas, even anxiety and depression. And, of course, a change in bowel habits. So is there one natural treatment that is best for all three of them?
Before answering that question, it will help to look at the differences between IBS and IBD.
First of all, as its name reveals, Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a syndrome rather than a disease. Even though IBS can be extremely painful and debilitating, the bowel itself is not damaged. Diagnostic tests typically show no sign of disease or inflammation. However, people with IBS have usually experienced some kind of trauma, whether physical or emotional. We’ll look at why this is important to choosing the best natural treatment later in the article.
Inflammatory Bowel Disease shows definite injury to the digestive tract. Inflammation is a sign that something is wrong in the body. With Colitis, the inflammation is usually confined to the colon and rectum, while in Crohn’s Disease, the inflammation can spread all the way up the intestines to the stomach and sometimes to the esophagus and mouth.
Conventional medicine seems to be better at diagnosing IBS and IBD than treating it, and believes the cause of IBS, Crohn’s and Colitis is unknown. There is no single drug or surgery that has proven to be the final answer for these health problems.
The most helpful treatment for Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Crohn’s and Colitis takes the whole person into account. This approach recognizes that your digestive system is affected by food, stress, chemical toxins, your lifestyle habits, your emotional background, and your own natural ability to heal.
In fact, trauma researchers, including Robert Scaer MD and David Berceli PhD, have clearly linked IBS and trauma. It’s no secret that many war veterans have Irritable Bowel Syndrome. These people suffer from stored trauma reactions that have not been fully processed through the mind and body systems.
But plenty of civilians experience trauma as well. It can be from physical causes such as a car accident, house fire, or breaking your leg while skiing. Or from emotional causes like bullying, verbal abuse, or neglect. Or combination of both, as when people go through a plane crash or natural disaster.
Trauma can be dealt with in a fairly short period of time (weeks rather than years) with methods including Gary Craig’s Emotional Freedom Technique® which is a highly effective form of acupressure tapping, Peter Levine’s Somatic Experiencing, or David Berceli’s Trauma Release Exercises. Dr Scaer believes that unreleased trauma is the primary cause of IBS. Once the trauma is cleared, the body is no longer triggered to react with irritable bowel symptoms.
While people with Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis may have emotional or physical trauma factors, it’s vital to look at diet and exposure to chemical toxins. Removing wheat, sugar and other grains from the diet or using Elaine Gottschall’s Specific Carbohydrate Diet can make a huge difference for these two inflammatory bowel diseases.
In his book, Dangerous Grains, Dr James Braly links gluten cereal grains to both IBD and IBS (along with a shocking list of other health problems), although not everyone with Irritable Bowel Syndrome is grain-sensitive. It’s important to find out if you are, as some people with IBS can tolerate grains and some can’t.
So what is the best natural treatment for IBS, Crohn’s and Colitis? A combination of dealing with stress and trauma, choosing the right diet, and getting toxic chemicals out of the home environment will make the healing difference.

As I suggested at the start of this article, doctor’s can be prone to laziness or sloppiness in diagnosing IBS – It may be they have little time to care and sometimes just want an easier life. The fact that IBS, Crohn’s Disease and U.C. all have overlapping symptoms can only serve to complicate matters and bamboozle a poor, overworked physician. So yet another reason to educate yourself about your symptoms.
Next time you pop into a drug store section of the supermarket or any pharmacy, take a look at all the potions and pills associated with IBS ‘cures’. Maybe it’s time to consider the more natural answers to alleviating the symptoms of IBS?
Natural Remedies For IBS – A Quick and Easy Cure. By Kate Allen.

Fennel – If this is combined with Dill, another herb, it can help calm the intestines and reduce symptoms such as gas and bloating.
Ginger – this is a great ally for our digestive functioning. It allays the symptoms such as indigestion and nausea.
Cinnamon – This is effective in preventing diarrhea. Not only does it taste good but it also helps reduce the level of cholesterol and sugar in the blood stream.
Sufferers if this disorder should also try a product called DigestAssist. Like what its name suggests, it can help promote a healthy functioning of the digestive system and supports its good interaction with the brain and the nervous system.
DigestAssist eases up unwanted symptoms after meals and can provide immediate relief. This product uses herbal ingredients such as ginger, fennel, peppermint and stomach bush. These powerhouse ingredients enable the digestive system to perform normally.
It is easy to say that natural remedies for IBS work better than over-the-counter medications. You can try this kind of remedy and you might be pleasantly surprised with its results too.

It’s always refreshing to read alternative views about treating IBS symptoms – other than by adopting conventional diets. The message is loud and clear; experiment with different options until you find what works best for you.
Here are a few direct links to recent videos concerning Irritable Bowel Syndrome, which readers may find interesting. You need to wait until the short advertisement plays first before viewing.
The following article is interesting as it discusses the psychosomatic link between gut problems and the brain – among other things.
Psychotherapy for IBS. by Bcured
There is increasing evidence that supports the view that irritable bowel syndrome is a disorder of brain-gut function. The brain’s ability to control motor activities of the intestines is impaired. There is an imbalance between the stomach, intestines, brain functionality, and autonomic nervous systems, and an irritable bowel syndrome treatment method should address this as well. Medications for IBS may consist of stool softeners and laxatives in constipation-predominant IBS, and antidiarrheals in diarrhea-predominant IBS for mild symptoms. Drugs affecting serotonin in the intestines can help reduce symptoms. Serotonin stimulates the gut motility and so agonists can help constipation-predominate irritable bowel, while antagonists can help diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel.
For patients who do not adequately respond to dietary fiber, osmotic laxatives such as polyethylene glycol, sorbitol, and lactulose can help avoid ‘cathartic colon’ which has been associated with stimulant laxatives. Lubiprostone, is a gastrointestinal agent used for the treatment of idiopathic chronic constipation and constipation-predominant IBS. Lubiprostone is well-tolerated in adults, including elderly patients. The secretions soften the stool, increase motility, and promote spontaneous bowel movements (SBM). Unlike many laxative products, Lubiprostone does not show signs of tolerance, dependency, or altered serum electrolyte concentration.
The use of antispasmodic drugs may help patients, especially those with cramps or diarrhea. It can be divided in two groups: neurotropics and musculotropics. Neurotropics act at the nerve fibre of the parasympathicus but also affect other nerves and have side effects. Musculotropics act directly at the smooth muscle of the gastrointestinal tract, relieving spasm without affecting normal gut motility. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor anti-depressants, because of their serotonergic effect, would seem to help IBS, especially patients who are constipation predominant. Alosetron were trialed for irritable bowel syndrome but due to severe adverse effects namely ischemic colitis and severe constipation are not available or recommended for irritable bowel syndrome.
The mind-body or brain-gut interactions has been proposed for irritable bowel syndrome and is gaining increasing research attention. For some patients psychological therapies may help with symptoms. Cognitive behavioral therapy has been found to improve symptoms in a number of studies. Relaxation therapy has also been found to be helpful. Cognitive behavioural therapy and hypnosis have been found to be the most beneficial. Hypnosis can improve mental wellbeing and cognitive behavioural therapy can provide psychological coping strategies for dealing with distressing symptoms as well as help suppress thoughts and behaviours which increase the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome.
A survey found IBS patients were most interested in learning about foods to avoid, causes of IBS, medications, coping strategies, and psychological factors related to IBS. The respondents indicated that they wanted their physicians to be available via phone or e-mail following a visit, have the ability to listen, and provide hope and support. Due to often unsatisfactory results from medical treatments for IBS, up to 50 percent of people turn to complementary alternative medicine. In order to provide full reversal of the condition and produce the absolute best IBS treatment, IBS DropsRx have been concentrated with a wide spectrum of very specific plant extracts exhibiting a curative effect in treatment for IBS. Mentha Piperata, Peppermint oil is concentrated in IBS DropsRx, which is rapidly absorbed into the bloodstream and system. Coming in contact with the gastric mucous membrane, they exercise at first a stimulating and afterwards sensations caused by accumulations of flatulence, providing rapid relief through reflex action by driving on the imprisoned gas. Often after ingestion, irritable bowel syndrome pain instantly dissipates, and flatus is expelled.

It’s probably true that most people would consider that diet is the foremost contributor towards their IBS symptoms. However, if the real, underlying problem stems from psychological distress, then concentrating on dietary matters might lead to confusion rather than remedy.
Sometimes, a change of diet can actually make things worse. This is highlighted in the following post:
Changing Your Diet to Cure IBS by Oscar Mooney
A cure for IBS has yet to be found, but its symptoms can be managed by a change in diet. A person can also manage the symptoms by reducing his or her stress and of course with medication. Each person has different trigger foods that can cause IBS symptoms. Physicians often observe that patients are relieved knowing that these symptoms are not signs of a major decease.
People should be aware of diet changes that could prevent IBS from getting worse. First they should know the foods to avoid. Examples of the foods that may cause the symptoms to become worse are food high in fat like deep fried foods, milk and dairy products like cheese or yogurt, chocolates, alcohol and caffeine which is normally found in coffee and carbonated drinks. If these foods cause the symptoms of IBS, people should minimize their intake or even better refrain from eating them. For people to find out which food products are causing their symptoms they should monitor what they eat and keep a log of food intake during the day, what symptoms are experienced, what time these symptoms occurred, and what food makes you feel bad every time you eat it. Then take your notes to your physician for them to be able to know which food you should refrain from eating.
There are also foods which are advisable for people with IBS to eat; these are foods that contain fiber. Fiber reduces the symptoms of IBS especially constipation. Fiber makes the stool soft, bulky and makes the stool easy to pass. Fibers can be found in foods like bran, bread, cereals, beans, fruits, and vegetables. Bread that contains fiber is whole-grain bread; whole-grain cereal, beans fiber can be found in kidney and lima beans, the fruits that contain fiber are apples and peaches, and the vegetables that contain fiber are broccoli, raw cabbage, carrots, and raw peas.
Adding these foods to your daily diet gradually helps your body adjust to them. Aside from advising people to eat more foods with fiber, physicians sometimes tell the patient to get more fiber by either taking a fiber pill mixing a high fiber powder into drinking. But, be aware that too much fiber all at once might cause gas and can actually trigger the symptoms of IBS.
How much a person eats during the day also matters. Large meals can lead to cramping and diarrhea. If this happens, change your meals and eat four or five small meals a day instead. If you don’t want to do this or it won’t fit in with your schedule stick to three meals a day, reducing the quantity you eat.
If you suspect you are suffering with IBS, you should first consult your primary care physician before taking other steps.
Comments:
It’s best to take a systematic approach when making any diet-change in order to monitor changes (good or bad) more accurately.

Drink plenty of water. This will help prevent constipation. If you have diarrhea, you need to drink a lot of water so you don’t become dehydrated. Try for eight glasses per day. Also important when on a diet for IBS, is to eat smaller meals, which may reduce or prevent bloating. Don’t eat too quickly, as this may cause you to swallow more air, which will increase gassiness.
The following foods can cause symptoms of IBS to flare-up and should be avoided on a diet for IBS: wheat, caffeine, dairy products, red meats, gluten, alcohol, fried foods, citrus fruits, artificial sweeteners, chocolate, any foods high in fat, carbonated drinks. Not everyone with IBS has problems with all of these foods. To find out what foods cause your IBS to flare up, keep a food diary. By creating a diet sheet for IBS, patients can take charge of their health and stay in control of their symptoms. Not all dietary changes will completely eliminate symptoms and the pain associated with IBS. Be sure to talk with a physician about what you have discovered and find out if there are any other treatment plans that may help with the condition.
When it comes to other IBS treatments, many people turn to natural treatments in order to relieve their symptoms, and in particular this includes peppermint oil. Peppermint oil is most widely used for IBS. The antispasmodic properties of peppermint for IBS treatments have been confirmed in clinical trials, including its benefits in reducing colonic spasms. Peppermint oil is concentrated in IBS DropsRx, which is rapidly absorbed into the bloodstream and system. Characterized by powerful and real pharmacological activities, IBS DropsRx unequivocally qualifies as an “ethical drug” in the treatment of IBS. The therapeutic effectiveness of the active compounds in this treatment is unparalleled and substantiated on a global scale.
Very recent advances in the scientific understanding of the medicinal plant extracts in IBS DropsRx suggest a much broader use of natural medicine to treat and reverse IBS and related disorders than science thought possible just ten years ago. IBS DropsRx is concentrated with a wide spectrum of medicinal plant extracts exhibiting a curative effect against IBS, as demonstrated by a wealth of scientific and clinical studies. IBS is a disorder that can be difficult to live with. Being able to control the symptoms and pain can make life a lot easier for people with the disorder.
Just give yourself another chance by trying this natural plant medicine, maybe you can see miracles happen to you. To learn more, please go to http://www.naturespharma.org.
In this article you will find out about abdominal bloating causes and cures. Some questions you might wish answered are: Is what I have in fact bloating or is it just fat? What causes abdominal bloating? And, of most importance, what are some cures?
These are several of the questions that run through peoples’ minds while staring down at that extra-large bulge they wish would just go away. I mean, is it fat or gas? If I initiate an exercise program, will that take care of it?
And then the sorry lamentation is, “I hate looking like this and I feel so uncomfortable!”
Whatever is going though your mind, you want to get rid of that bloated stomach as quick as possible, right? And knowing its causes can help.
However, before we get into what will help, permit me tell you what will not help. If your bloating is caused by digestive problems, stomach exercises will not help. Yes, your stomach will get firmer, but the stomach gas will still bloat your stomach. So you need to get to the source of the problem.
**Stomach Bloating Causes**
Okay, let’s take a look at some things that may be causing your bloating:
- Stress. Stress is awful stuff. Stress can cause a myriad of symptoms that don’t have any physical explanation. Stress affects every part of your being, especially your digestive system. Stress just isn’t good for you. The sad thing about it is that we live in a stress-laden society, so it’s hard to avoid. You may not be able to avoid it, but you can take steps to control it. One of the most important steps it to exercise, eat a good nutritious diet, and try not to let things bother you.
- Foods that are hard to tolerate. There are certain foods that many people cannot tolerate well. Foods that are hard for your body to tolerate can definitely cause abdominal bloating. So if you are experiencing bloating, stay away from milk and wheat products and see if you don’t improve. Oh, and I don’t want to forget about the chocolate. Sad, isn’t it? I love dark chocolate, but every time I eat it I know I am in for some severe digestive problems.
- Eating too much too fast. This is one of the easiest abdominal bloating causes to eliminate. If you have a compromised digestive system, it is much better to eat small portions at a time and to eat slowly. Put your fork down between bites and chew your food well. Your stomach will thank you for it.
- Fatty foods. Fat is very hard to digest and can make it difficult for other foods to digest properly, thus causing abdominal bloating.
- Coffee. Coffee is a stomach irritant. I like coffee, but I only drink it around once a week. If I drink it too often, I pay for it.
- Irritable Bowel Syndrome ((IBS). I saved the worst for last. I have IBS and I know what it can do. It not only can cause bloating, but pain, diarrhea, upset stomach and other stomach discomforts. IBS is not life-threatening, but it sure can make life difficult. But it can be controlled.
There can be scores of abdominal bloating causes, and the above are just the most typical ones. No matter what the cause, digestive difficulties can make you miserable. That’s why you need to find out all you can about getting your stomach and life back to normal.

If you have abdominal bloating and gas, you know only to well how devastating they can be. I too have experienced the horrible affects of these digestive system culprits. However, I want to encourage you to cheer up, because I have discovered how to manage and stop bloating and gas, and so can you.**How to Control or Prevent Your Abdominal Bloating and Gas**
Yes, you can curb those painful and aggravating stomach disorders. Here are some things you can begin doing right away to deal with that bloating and gas problem:
–Keep Away From Foods You May Be Allergic To–
You can get on an elimination diet and go through a bunch of misery trying to figure out what you are allergic to, but my objective is to give you a much easier shortcut. There are certain foods that a lot of people are allergic to, and these are a great place to start. So start by avoiding the following foods for a month and see if you reduce or eliminate your abdominal bloating and gas:
- Wheat Products. A lot of people are allergic to wheat products. If you are one of them, they can be the cause of your bloating and gas. Staying away from wheat products means avoiding both whole wheat and white flour products. This includes breads, tortillas, pasta, cakes and such.
- Milk Products. Milk products can give you the double-gas whammy. Not only are numerous people allergic to milk products, but even more people are intolerant to the lactose naturally found in milk. This means staying away from milk, ice cream, puddings, etc.
- Certain Fruits. Some people are allergic to certain fruits, particularly strawberries. Avoid strawberries or any other fruit you suspect is causing any sort of reaction. Eating the wrong fruit can really bloat your stomach.
–Irritable Bowel Syndrome–
Irritable bowel syndrome, also known as IBS, can really play havoc with your digestive system, including the increase of abdominal bloating and gas. I have had IBS for just about 20 years. If you have IBS, you know it. You will have bouts of constipation alternating with bouts of diarrhea…and along with that, lots of bloating, gas, and pain…lots of pain.
Irritable bowel syndrome may feel like it, but it is not life threatening. You can control irritable bowel syndrome by what you eat and the way you eat. For starters, let me suggest that you keep away from fatty foods, eat slowly, and chew your food well.
Of course, there is more to it than that, but those suggestions will really help to manage the abdominal bloating and gas, along with some other miserable symptoms. Following the above advice will get you off to a good start, but I want to encourage you to keep reading and learning until you find out what makes you feel the best.

One of the main reasons why typical diets are bad for people is the loss of lean muscle. It may be true that you will probably lose weight with most diets but only last for a short while. Added to this, up to half the weight loss will be water, glycogen, and unfortunately, lean muscle. Clinical studies have shown that when the dieter gains back the weight he/she lost, his or her fat-to-muscle ratio is worse than before starting the diet.
Furthermore, the typical diet shuts down the metabolism to a very slow pace. And why do most dieters go on a diet? Most likely, it’s a ‘quick fix’ diet because his or her metabolism isn’t doing the job anymore. If you are one of these people, it means that your metabolism isn’t burning up all the calories you’re consuming and a typical diet will only make this situation worse which is partially why most weight loss is short-lived.
So what about low carb diets? Researcher after researcher warned against the disasters of low carb dieting. Here are few of the reasons:
1. It causes high inflammation throughout the body. 2. Low carb diets bring with them high saturated fat, which has been proven to be detrimental to cardiovascular health.
3. Low carb diets also cause ketosis, which is a high acid state in the body that is unhealthy for your organs.
4. We must have natural carbohydrates to feed the beneficial bacteria in our gut and low carb diets have shown to cause a dysbiosis of the gut that contributes to conditions such as reflux, IBS, heartburn etc.
Why can you eat a lot of fruits and vegetables without gaining weight? This is because before you eat enough to get fat, you’re already stuffed. Take note that most fruits and vegetables consist mainly of water, with a comparatively small percentage of carbohydrates. A gram of carbohydrates contains only four calories, whereas a gram of fat contains nine. This means, for example, that you can have at least a pound of green beans for every ounce of butter – about 200 calories – you consume. An ounce equals approximately 28.35 grams.
Losing weight by cutting fat can take a while. An estimate is that you may lose only one or two pounds a month. Carbohydrates do require extra calories to digest but that simply means that for every 100 calories you eat, you’ll absorb 90. To get rid of fat, you must burn energy.

Are These Foods Really Healthy? by Kristen Burgess
We’ve been told over and over that certain foods are good foods, “health foods” that are ok for us to eat. But there are some “health foods” that really aren’t good for our health. This article will cover some common suspects. Fruit Juice
Fruit juice, that wonderful drink of childhood. I’m sure you’ve head by now that your children should drink only 100% fruit juice. Maybe you’ve made that change already. Unfortunately, that pure fruit juice isn’t very good for you or your children, either. That’s because pure fruit juices are almost pure sugar, and they act much like all other sugars in the body. They give a quick, temporary high, then a crashing low.
This up and down and up and down sugar level game can wear on the body – eventually causing insulin resistance. Research is now showing insulin resistance is at the very heart of many of today’s chronic illnesses, such as diabetes, infertility issues, and obesity. Terrifying conditions like diabetes and obesity are reaching even our children.
Fruit is a healthy and important choice to server to children (and adults). But it’s far better to eat the entire fruit – with all its complex nutrients, than to just drink pure fruit juice.
Processed Cheese
Another favorite for American kids is processed cheese. And unfortunately, it’s another foods that is very unhealthy. The sad thing about cheese is that it used to be very healthy. The reason processed cheese (or even worse “processed cheese food”) is not healthy is because it’s made from milk from cows being fed inferior food, which is then processed into oblivion. This lifeless, tasteless, processed milk is then made into “cheese” where it’s built up with fillers, dyes, and additives to get it to what you think of as “cheese.”
The good news about cheese is there’s still a whole lot of good cheese out there. You’re not going to get your Kraft singles to be anything better than garbage. But, you can get great cheeses. Raw milk cheese is an excellent bet. And many communities have local cheese artisans who lovingly care for their milk animals (cows, sheep, and goats) and produce delicious, creamy cheeses that children and adults love. You’ll spend a little more, but you’ll be getting a real food you can really enjoy.
Whole Grains
How can I be saying that whole grains are not good for you? Aren’t whole grains the holy grail of health? The fact of the matter is, grains are hard for humans to digest. Now, where you go with this fact, which absolutely the truth, can differ.
Some recommend that we do not eat grains at all, and this is a very viable option. You eat a good amount of protein daily, and then you get your fiber and carbohydrates from vegetables and fruits. As you change to this grain-independent style of eating you’ll probably find that you’re eating less overall, and you feel more satisfied. Your health will certainly improve.
Others recommend that if you consume grains you ensure that they’re properly prepared. “Properly preparing” grains means you let them ferment so the parts of the grains that are hard to digest, such as phytic acid, are broken down. Traditional sourdough bread is fermented in this manner, and thus why many people find sourdough bread pleasing and easy on the stomach.
If you suffer from celiac disease, IBS, or any auto-immune conditions, going grain free is something you should look into. Research “Primal” and “Paleo” nutrition. For proper fermenting of grains, look up the Weston A. Price Foundation.
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is thought to be a condition between the brain and the stomach. This means that some of the nerves from the brain link to the stomach where IBS pain is. This also includes the colon area. Due to the link, stress has a big impact on the reactions in the digestive system and intestinal tract.
IBS is not directly caused by stress; however, it can worsen considerably when you are in a stressful part of your life and can trigger some of the symptoms. If you suffer from financial, emotional, mental, or any other kind of stress, this can cause you to have severe IBS symptoms. Learning ways to cope with your stress will help to calm your digestive system. Many people do this by learning relaxation techniques and finding time to relax during your day. This will help you to prevent IBS symptoms from flaring up. When it comes to the treatment for IBS, there are a few different options available, but the first thing that most doctors recommend is that you follow a healthy diet for IBS.
What you eat and drink is going to largely affect your condition and the symptoms that you experience. There are certain foods that you should include in your diet for IBS while particular foods and beverages would worsen your condition and you should therefore try to stay away from them. The benefits you will gain from changing your diet will definitely be worth it. Therefore, in terms of the foods that you should include in your diet for IBS, fresh fruits and vegetables definitely rank up at the very top of the list. You also want to increase your intake of fiber, but make sure that as you start consuming more fiber you also begin drinking more water, in case you may end up worsening your symptoms, in particular constipation.
